AVR-based Scrolling LED Display

August 18th, 2008 by miked

Tuomas Tuononen built a website while at the University of Oulu in Finland. I can’t tell you much about him because most of his little website is in Finnish. Luckily he made one page in English. That is the documentation for this AVR LED display project. It has over 400 LEDs, programmable fonts and can scroll static or dynamic text. He includes all software, firmware and schematics necessary to make this a reality. <via Cool Circuit>

Arduino Binary Clock

Every one loves Arduino builds, and here is a good one. Daniel Andrade was not content with sitting on the couch watching movies, so he decided to whip up a binary clock. It is an excellent write up and includes all necessary code. <via Hackszine>

Blinky LEDs

August 14th, 2008 by miked

I like LEDs and make no apologies for that. Lights were one of the first electrical elements I played with as a youngster and Light Emitting Diodes are the “Hello World” for many beginner circuits. Here is Daniel’s quick project to make LEDs blink with your music. Readers Brian and Orephik posted their tweaks in the comments. Not a hard project, and all it takes are a few LEDs and a transistor or two.

Basic Stamp Controlled Sub

August 12th, 2008 by miked

RichardF over on the Parallax Forums made a BS2 controlled submersible ROV (remotely operated vehicle) to survey the local lake bottoms and “look at neat fish”. The sub has a lights, a camera, depth sensor and a compass. It is electronically tethered with some ethernet cable. He did some bathtub testing, then moved to the lake shore. This is a work-in-progress, so complete results haven’t been posted, but it is still a good read.
